Gynecomastia

Many people don’t realize that gynecomastia is not only common but treatable. If gynecomastia is hurting your confidence and impacting your life, Dr. Coville has over 25 years of experience using plastic surgery to help his patients achieve their desired appearance.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia refers to excess breast tissue in males, which results in a softer, more feminine shape. It is an extremely common condition that affects 40-60% of men and boys and often leads to embarrassment or decreased confidence.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

The cause of gynecomastia varies greatly from person to person. Usually, gynecomastia results from an imbalance in the hormones testosterone and estrogen.

Testosterone is the hormone associated with male traits, while estrogen is associated with feminine characteristics, such as the growth of breasts. However, men produce estrogen in small amounts. Gynecomastia may result when their bodies have too much estrogen or it is no longer balanced with testosterone.

Gynecomastia can also be influenced by certain medications, medical conditions, street drugs, and some over-the-counter herbal products. Excess breast tissue in males usually begins during adolescence but can occur at any time and often develops with age.

Treatment for Gynecomastia

Men often seek to reduce gynecomastia with weight loss and exercise, but this will only affect breast fat. When enlarged or feminine breast shape in males is caused by excess breast tissue, it won’t respond to weight loss.

The most effective treatment for gynecomastia is male breast reduction surgery. Dr. Coville can use this procedure to remove excess breast tissue and sculpt the breasts for a more masculine shape.

What to Expect With Male Breast Reduction

Male breast reduction is an outpatient procedure to remove excess breast tissue, and Dr. Coville has extensive experience delivering excellent results. He will perform the surgery under general anesthesia, making incisions around the areola where visible scarring will be minimal.

You will probably need to wear a compression garment for three to four weeks after the procedure to minimize swelling. After a week of rest and recovery, most people can return to their regular routine, though you may need to wait a month to resume any strenuous activities.

Am I a Good Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

If you have enlarged breast tissue and are concerned about its effect on your appearance and confidence, schedule a consultation at Cornerstone Plastic Surgery to discuss your goals with Dr. Coville and determine if male breast reduction surgery is the right choice for you. Ideal candidates for gynecomastia surgery are overall healthy and have no serious medical conditions.
