WHY GET A LIP LIFT?

As we age, our lips tend to lengthen and droop almost as though they are growing. As we get older, our upper lip gets progressively lower over our upper teeth. This is where “dental show” comes into play. A dental show (or Teeth show) is when people can see your bright smiling white teeth. Younger people have more dental show when their lips are at rest and slightly parted. Older people, or people who have longer lips as part of a family trait, lose that upper dental show and show more of their lower teeth at rest. It is a more youthful and more attractive look to have more upper teeth show, or upper dental show.

Most people start off with their teeth showing, and as they age, that lip lengthens and droops and continues to do so until it comes over their teeth more and more, which becomes to the human eye simply less visually attractive. It does make one look older, and our goal is to reverse that by lifting the lip.

There are a few benefits to lifting the lip. First, it increases teeth show, thus creating a more youthful and more attractive look. Second, sometimes a longer lip will slightly interfere with speaking. The lip lift can make speaking feel more comfortable. And, perhaps most importantly, it also has a wonderful side effect of rotating the lip upward and outward. This creates the look of a plumper lip, which is generally considered more attractive both for women and men.

Another reason for a lip lift is for drooping corners of the mouth. Those downward lines at the corners of our mouths can give us a sad or angry look. Lifting the corners of the mouth is the second type of lip lift, and can turn a frown into a smile in about an hour.

BEFORE & AFTERS

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A LIP LIFT?

You may consider a lip lift for several reasons. Some people want to shorten the philtrum because the distance between the nose and lip looks too long. Others want to enhance their Cupid’s bow or achieve fuller-looking lips without dermal fillers. Any of these individuals might make a good candidate for a lip lift. Dr. Coville can create results that range from subtle to dramatic based on your goals.

WHAT IS THE LIP LIFT PROCEDURE LIKE?

Several types of lip lifts are available; depending on your needs a different incision may be used. A lip lift that is used to shorten the upper lip will require a sort of gullwing type incision. This incision will be hidden very nicely in the nostrils. A lip lift that turns the corners of the mouth upward will have two incisions hidden nicely in the corners of the lips. Dr. Coville will develop a surgical plan that considers, the right type of lip lift for you, the amount of skin he will remove, and the natural balance of your facial features.

After injecting lidocaine to numb any discomfort, Dr. Coville will make a small incision under the nose and remove a section of the skin. The size of the skin section will vary depending on how much shorter he wants to make the philtrum. An average amount of lift may range from 10 to 15 millimeters. The upper lip is secured in its new position, creating a more defined Cupid’s bow and revealing more of the red, youthful-looking lip area.

No matter what technique is used, Dr. Coville’s lip lift procedures at Cornerstone Plastic Surgery in Atlantic County, New Jersey help patients rejuvenate their appearances with younger, plumper lips.

FAQ

Since a lip lift is performed under local anesthesia, you will not have any of the risks from other anesthesia types. The procedure takes less than an hour, and you can go home afterward. Dr. Coville will provide you with comprehensive follow-up care instructions, and following these will prevent any issues with healing.

The results of a lip lift depend on the skill and experience of the surgeon. The most common complications with a lip lift come from problems with the surgical procedure. If the surgeon does not position and anchor the upper lip properly, the lip could droop. His excellent surgical technique lets Dr. Coville ensure your results will last.

Your pre-surgery instructions may recommend avoiding sun exposure or harsh products on the area before your procedure. You should also avoid taking any blood-thinning medications like aspirin and other NSAIDs. Dr. Coville will review the plan with you before surgery and answer any questions you may have.
