Hair Transplant

Whether it’s caused by genetics, medical conditions, or stress, hair loss is a common concern and can diminish your confidence. Dr. Fred Coville has over 25 years of experience in aesthetic surgery with exceptional skills to restore both your hair and your confidence.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Hair loss has a variety of causes. It is more common in men and usually comes with age, but it can affect anyone. Some causes of hair loss are temporary, whereas others are permanent since the follicles lose the ability to grow hair.

Causes of hair loss include:

  • Genetics
  • Stress
  • Medical conditions
  • Medications
  • Hormonal changes
  • Some hair products or treatments

For men, balding and thinning most often occurs on the front, top, and crown of the head. This is called Male Pattern Baldness. It is usually caused by the hormone dihydrotestosterone, which prevents hair follicles from making new hair.

What is Surgical Hair Restoration?

Surgical hair restoration, or a hair transplant, is a procedure to treat balding or thinning hair. It does this by transplanting hair you already have to the bald or thinning areas. There are two hair transplant methods that Dr. Coville will use depending on your needs and goals.

In a Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) procedure, he will remove one or more strips of skin from the side or back of the scalp. He can then separate hair follicles from these strips and implant them where they’re needed for new hair growth.

Using the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method, Dr. Coville will use a tool called  NeoGraft®. This state of the are device will help Dr. Coville harvest individual hair follicles from the scalp. This techniques protects the hair from damage during transplantation and allows the donor areas to be almost imperceptible when healed.  He will then implant them in the bald or thinning areas.

Recovery After a Hair Transplant

Your scalp may be sore and swollen for a few days after the procedure, and you should avoid touching your head. Most people return to work and normal activities within a couple of days of a hair transplant. After about ten days, you can return to your regular hair care routine.

Hair Transplant Results

Dr. Coville will carefully follow your unique hair pattern during the procedure to ensure natural-looking results. A hair transplant can thicken the hair and restore bald areas.

It will take a few months for the transplanted hair follicles to return to their regular growth cycle. First, the transplanted hair will fall out a couple of weeks after the surgery. New hair will begin growing after approximately one month, and the full results will develop over several months.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Hair Transplant?

If you are concerned about thinning or balding hair, you may be an ideal candidate for a hair transplant. During a consultation at Cornerstone Plastic Surgery, Dr. Coville will discuss your goals and the cause of your hair loss to help you determine if a hair transplant is right for you.
