Gynecomastia is a condition that affects 40%-60% of men, but it is rarely spoken about. Whether due to embarrassment or anxiety, men struggle in silence with this condition and are desperate for a solution.

Gynecomastia surgery is a safe and effective solution to improve the appearance of the chest.

At Cornerstone Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Medicine, Dr. Fred Coville, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon, provides ample support, information, and effective treatment for men with gynecomastia.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is an enlargement of breasts in men due to changes in estrogen and testosterone hormone levels. The breasts become more prominent and often grow unevenly. Gynecomastia is common in adolescents; however, it can affect men of any age.

Often the condition resolves itself from a few months to a couple of years, but there are cases where the symptoms continue. Factors contributing to the persistent change include natural hormone changes, certain medications, recreational drugs, alcohol, health conditions, and some herbal products.

How Can You Get Rid of Gynecomastia?

Since it is due to the excess tissue in the breast, exercise does not affect gynecomastia. Gynecomastia surgery or male breast reduction surgery is the go-to solution for enlarged breast tissue in males. Removing breast tissue gives the chest a more contoured, masculine shape.

A common misconception is that the appearance of breasts in a male is due to extra fat. This is not the case and we at Cornerstone Plastic Surgery want you to understand that all the different fat removal techniques out there will not correct gynecomastia. Gynecomastia means that there is excess breast tissue that can only be removed through a small incision. Dr. Coville will be happy to discuss your options with you in detail when you visit with him.

Cost of Gynecomastia Surgery

Insurance does not typically cover gynecomastia surgery. Prices will range from a low of $6,000.00 to a high of $9,000.00 depending on several factors which Dr. Coville will discuss with you during your visit with him. The surgery price may include anesthesia fees, surgical facility costs, medical tests, post-surgery garments, prescriptions, and surgeon’s fees.

What to Expect with Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure performed with can be performed with local anesthesia, but more severe cases typically use general anesthesia. Most men having breast reduction only require a small incision around the areola, the pigmented area surrounding the nipple. The incision is inconspicuous after the surgery. Dr. Fred Coville extracts the extra breast tissue and fat, unnecessarily enlarging the chest to shape the chest into a pleasing masculine form.

Patients typically wear a compression garment 3-4 weeks after the surgery to minimize swelling and support the treated areas. The final results of the surgery may take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to show.

Men who complete the surgery are usually happy with the results and say it was the best decision they ever made.
