Hair Transplant

Serving Linwood, South Jersey and Jersey Shore

Hair loss can be emotionally draining and deeply frustrating for both men and women. While genetics, hormones, and aging all play a role, the root cause is the gradual shrinking of hair follicles over time. For some, thinning begins later in life; for others, it may start as early as their late teens. At Cornerstone Plastic Surgery, Dr. Fred offers advanced hair transplant solutions designed to restore density, confidence, and long-term, natural-looking growth.

What Are Hair Transplants?

Hair transplants are a hair restoration treatment by harvesting select hairs from healthy areas of your scalp and replanting those individual hairs into the balding areas. At Cornerstone, Dr. Fred Coville uses your own hair for transplants. Depending on the size of your treatment area and the technique used, a treatment may take from three hours up to eight hours.

NeoGraft®

NeoGraft® is an advanced technology that is used to remove hair follicles from a donor site and implant them with controlled pneumatic pressure. Being faster than traditional hair transplant devices, NeoGraft® allows you to reimplant sooner to maintain the healthy restoration and increase the success of the grafting process. Another advantage of NeoGraft® is that, unlike some other harvesting procedures that can leave a long scar in the back of your scalp, NeoGraft® donor sites heal with almost invisible scars

Manual Transplants

As manual implantation takes the longest, it is typically performed for smaller facial areas such as beards and eyebrows. Individual hairs are removed from the donor site and implanted into the target area, allowing for more precise growth of your hair.

Strip Technique

The strip technique was the preferred method for many years as it is less time-consuming than manual implants. However, this technique is used less often now due to advancements in technology such as NeoGraft®. For select patients, the strip technique may still be the ideal hair restoration method.

Under local anesthesia, the strip technique extracts a small portion of the scalp to collect the hairs. Before implanting, your practitioner preps the hairs under a microscope. Individual hairs are then placed manually into the balding areas. The donor site is then closed, leaving a linear scar. After your appointment, you may return home immediately.

Benefits

Hair transplants allow for a new you with a full head of hair. Some of the benefits of hair transplants include:

Minimal Downtime

You may experience minor bruising, swelling, and redness at the treatment site for a few days following your procedure. While recovery varies from person to person, most patients can return to work one to three days after their hair transplant.

Natural-Looking Results

With NeoGraft®, you can expect natural-looking results. Furthermore, after your implant, your hair prompts slow regrowth, meaning your hair will appear to grow back naturally.

Permanent Regrowth

The results of your NeoGraft® or manual hair transplant are permanent. You’ll be able to enjoy the stunning restoration of your hair for many years to come.

What Do Hair Transplants Feel Like?

With NeoGraft® technology, there is no pulling, twisting, or damage to the graft. For your comfort, you may receive local anesthesia with oral sedation to prevent any discomfort during the entire procedure. You should not feel pain during your hair transplant treatment, but you may feel dull pressure as the hair is implanted.

After the local anesthesia wears off, you may feel discomfort similar to a mild sunburn in the treated area. Talk to Dr. Fred about pain medications that will minimize the pain and help your healing process.

Results and Recovery

The side effects after hair transplants are minimal, with some bruising, redness, and swelling. Most patients can return to work in one to three days and require multiple sessions to see their ideal results. After each appointment, the hair implants should remain in place for two to three weeks. The implants are then shed to allow for some regrowth for three to four months. The hair regrowth will likely be minimal during this stage. Do not worry, as it is a natural part of the process.

You will see ongoing improvement in the 6-12 months after your treatment. Patients typically do not see noticeable regrowth until around nine months post-treatment. The final results, however, are permanent.

Ideal Candidates

A consultation with Dr. Fred will help determine the most effective plan for your unique pattern of hair loss. If you meet the requirements below, then you may be a good candidate for a hair transplant:

  • Are in good overall health
  • Have realistic goals and expectations
  • Have adequate donor hair available
  • Prefer permanent, natural hair restoration
  • Have mild-to-moderate thinning or pattern baldness

Patients with more advanced hair loss may benefit from combining transplantation with additional regenerative treatments offered at Cornerstone Plastic Surgery.
