Nanofat Injections: Next Generation Facial Volumization and Rejuvenation

From Brazillian Butt Lifts to facial rejuvenation, fat transfer procedures are typically associated with a boost in volume across the body. However, fat injections, or nanofat, can also work to revitalize the skin for a healthier, youthful appearance.

Nanofat is a type of fat extracted from the body and processed to harness its regenerative capabilities. After undergoing an emulsifying process, the fat’s regenerative components, like stem cells, can be injected into the tissue to improve the appearance of scars, uneven skin tones, and other similar skin issues.

What Is Nanofat?

Cosmetic procedures use different types of fat for different types of procedures. These fats vary in their extraction methods and their utility when injected. There are three types of fat most frequently used in plastic and cosmetic surgery: macrofat, microfat and nanofat.

Macrofat is typically required for large volume procedures like the Jersey Shore or Brazilian Butt Lift. These procedures demand large amounts of fat harvested from donor sites like the abdomen or waist that are obtained using caliber cannulas (metallic medical tubes). These large fat globules are then lightly processed to remove fluid and damaged cells before being injected into the targeted area.

Microfat is employed to increase volume in more delicate areas like the face, lips, and below the eyes. It can also be used to improve the appearance of small scar depressions, or placed in the labia for feminine rejuvenation procedures. The cannulas used to collect microfat are significantly smaller than those required to harvest macrofat, with much smaller fat particles being harvested as a result. This collected microfat is then processed to remove any oils and water before being injected into the treatment area.

Nanofat is microfat that goes through an additional processing step to modify its properties. It’s harvested in the same way as microfat, only using smaller caliber cannulas. Following extraction, the fat is also purified much like microfat. Where the two types of fat differ is that nanofat then undergoes a mechanical process to destroy the structure of the fat itself, leaving a complex mixture of regenerative cells and other components in the form of a smooth injectable liquid called nanofat.

What is nanofat used for?

Unlike macro and microfats, which are primarily injected below the skin to restore volume, nanofat is injected directly into the tissue for its regenerative properties, providing a younger, healthier appearance to the treated area.

Nanofat injections can be used as a standalone procedure to:

  • Repair skin damage
  • Even out skin pigmentation
  • Improve skin texture
  • Tighten and rejuvenate tissue

Apart from standalone procedures, injections can also be used alongside other non-surgical options to provide a combination treatment.

The Facial Time Warp, one of our most popular facial rejuvenation procedures, uses nanofat to bolster its revitalizing effects. Facial Time Warps combine microfat, nanofat and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections for a full facial treatment.

During this process, microfat is first injected to restore volume to the face, followed by injections of nanofat and PRP using a radiofrequency Morpheus microneedling device. This reinvigorates the skin while addressing scars, uneven skin tone, and other blemishes.

Nanofat is also a key component in our non-surgical feminine rejuvenation treatments. Nanofat, microfat and PRP are all injected into the labia to restore volume and tighten lax skin. In addition to the aesthetic improvements, this feminine rejuvenation treatment also enhances sexual function and treats stress incontinence.

Why We Recommend Nanofat Injections

Nanofat injections offer a unique opportunity to rejuvenate both the skin and other tissues. Few procedures can reinvigorate tissue using the body’s own restorative properties in the way nanofat does.

If you’re living with scars, fine wrinkles or other blemishes, nanofat is one of the best non-surgical options available. Similarly, the results of these injections are unmatched when it comes to non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation.

Why choose Cornerstone N.J. for Your fat transfer treatment

What to Expect During the Nanofat Procedure

Pre-treatment preparations and adherence to post-procedure instructions play a vital role in the outcome of your procedure. Following these simple instructions will ensure your final results are as good as they can possibly be.

Preparations

The first step of your nanofat injection is meeting with our team. During your complimentary consultation at one of our New Jersey offices, you will have the opportunity to meet Dr. Coville. He will explain the procedure to you in detail and answer any questions you may have. Together you will explore the options available to you and draft a customized treatment plan.

On the day of your procedure, you will need to remove any hair from the donor site in order to facilitate the fat collection process. If you’re prone to cold sores or genital warts around the treatment or donor sites, you’ll need to use the appropriate pretreatment medication in advance of your procedure.

At the clinic, we will apply a topical anesthetic to both the treatment and donor sites to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. While topical anesthetics are typically used for nanofat treatments, oral sedatives and nitrous oxide gas can also be provided upon request.

The procedure

The first step of the procedure involves removing fat from the donor site using a small caliber cannula. Depending on your body’s natural distribution of fat and your personal preferences, fat is typically collected from the inner thighs, inner knees, lower abdomen or flanks.

Following extraction, Dr. Coville purifies the fat to remove any damaged cells or additional fluids. The fat is then mechanically processed to emulsify it, leaving a regenerative liquid that is ready to inject.

During the final step of this process, nanofat is carefully injected into the tissue at the treatment site. The entire process takes approximately 90 minutes, with patients able to return home immediately following treatment.

Recovery and aftercare

The recovery process is fairly quick and simple. Mild swelling, bruising and redness may occur around the injection site, however, these typically fade shortly after the procedure. In some cases, patients may experience mild localized discomfort once the topical anesthetics wear off.

The procedure requires little downtime. While patients should avoid strenuous activities for up to one week, most people are able to return to work and their normal daily activities within one to three days of the procedure.

Results

For most patients, once the recovery process is complete the final results take between three and six months to become fully apparent. In the months following treatment, patients should slowly begin to notice:

  • Tighter tissue in the treated area
  • An even skin tone
  • Improvements to skin texture
  • A reduction in scaring and similar blemishes

How long do the results last?

Patients can expect long-lasting results after only one nanofat treatment. While the injections can’t stop the natural aging process, the improvements provided by the procedure remain apparent for many years.

Nanofat Injections FAQ

From your first consultation through to the recovery process, we are always available to answer any questions you may have concerning the potential risks involved with nanofat injections.

Are nanofat injections an effective form of weight loss?

While it’s true some fat is removed from a donor site in order to acquire nanofat, only trace amounts are required for this procedure. Hence, the tiny amount of fat harvested makes no significant difference to the donor site or its surrounding area.
