What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty surgery reduces or reshapes the labia minora, the inner folds of tissue around the vaginal opening. There’s no “ideal” size or shape; genetics, childbirth, aging, hormonal shifts, and weight changes all influence how the tissue develops. Many women pursue the procedure for relief from chronic irritation as much as for appearance, and Dr. Coville customizes each surgery to preserve natural contours while improving comfort and function.

Most procedures are performed as outpatient surgery under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, so you’re home the same day.

Dr. Coville’s approach starts from the idea that there’s no single correct labial shape to aim for. Instead, he works from your own anatomy, reducing what’s causing discomfort while keeping the result looking like it belongs to you.

Why Women Choose Labiaplasty

  • Reduce excess tissue causing friction or chafing
  • Improve comfort during exercise, cycling, or wearing fitted clothing
  • Correct asymmetry
  • Simplify hygiene
  • Restore confidence during intimacy or in swimwear and athletic wear

Why Patients Choose Dr. Fred Coville

Dr. Coville is a residency and fellowship-trained aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon with 25-plus years in practice and more than 14,000 procedures to his name. Before focusing on aesthetic surgery, his training included a burn fellowship at Nassau County Medical Center, work that demands exceptional precision with delicate, functional tissue, and directly informs how he approaches labiaplasty in NJ today.

Patients throughout South Jersey and the Jersey Shore choose him because every plan is built around their anatomy first, not a standard template — and because he treats a conversation about labial discomfort with the same seriousness he’d give any other surgical consultation.

What Labiaplasty Can Improve

Physical irritation. Rubbing or pulling from excess tissue during exercise, cycling, or sitting for long periods is one of the most common complaints labiaplasty addresses.

Asymmetry. It’s common for one side of the labia to be larger than the other; when that affects comfort or confidence, surgery can create a more proportional result.

Hygiene. Trapped moisture and difficulty cleansing thoroughly often ease once excess tissue is reduced.

Your Consultation

Dr. Coville understands that discussing intimate anatomy takes trust, and every consultation reflects that. He will review your health history, discuss your goals, examine the tissue, and recommend whether the trim or wedge technique, or a combination with another procedure, best fits your anatomy.

There’s no pressure and no judgment in this conversation. Whether your priority is comfort during a run, ease getting dressed, or how you feel undressed, that goal shapes the plan. You’ll leave understanding your options, expected recovery, and potential risks well enough to decide confidently, on your own timeline.

How the Procedure Works

Labiaplasty surgery typically takes one to two hours under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on your treatment plan. Dr. Coville removes or reshapes excess tissue using the trim or wedge technique, closing incisions with fine dissolvable sutures that don’t require removal. Beforehand, you’ll receive instructions on medications, nicotine, fasting if needed, and arranging transportation home. Most patients return home shortly after surgery, and follow-up visits track healing, swelling, and scar care.

Recovery Timeline

Week one: Rest, wear loose and breathable clothing, apply cold compresses, and keep the area clean. Short walks are encouraged.

Weeks two through four: Swelling continues to decrease, and many patients return to work and light activity. Avoid heavy lifting, running, cycling, horseback riding, swimming, intercourse, and tampon use.

Weeks four through six: Residual swelling resolves and light exercise may resume as directed.

Around six weeks: Most patients are cleared for intercourse, tampon use, swimming, and vigorous exercise. Your own timeline may vary, and Dr. Coville will confirm when you’re ready.

Benefits

  • Reduced friction and irritation during daily activities
  • Greater comfort in fitted clothing, swimwear, and undergarments
  • Easier hygiene
  • Balanced, natural appearance that preserves normal anatomy
  • Long-lasting results, since excess tissue is permanently removed

For many patients, the most noticeable change is not just physical; it is not having to think about the discomfort or self-consciousness anymore. That mental space tends to matter as much as the surgical result itself.

Risks

Potential risks include swelling, bruising, mild bleeding, infection, temporary numbness or altered sensation, delayed healing, scarring, mild asymmetry, and rarely the need for revision. Dr. Coville minimizes these through careful planning and attentive post-operative care, and will review them in full during your consultation.

Are You a Candidate?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Experience discomfort from enlarged labial tissue
  • Notice irritation during exercise or daily activities
  • Feel self-conscious about appearance or asymmetry
  • Are in good general health and a non-smoker (or willing to stop before surgery)
  • Have realistic expectations for your results

Procedures Often Combined With Labiaplasty

Clitoral hood reduction frequently accompanies labiaplasty, since excess tissue in both areas often develops together. Vaginoplasty is a common pairing for women seeking both internal and external rejuvenation, and fat transfer to the labia can restore volume and softness using your own fat. Non-surgical Votiva® may support long-term tissue health afterward. Dr. Coville will discuss what, if anything, makes sense for your anatomy.

FAQ

Labiaplasty cost varies based on the extent of tissue reduction and whether other procedures are combined. Dr. Coville provides a personalized cost estimate for your specific labiaplasty during a private consultation.

When performed carefully, labiaplasty is designed to preserve the nerves responsible for sensation. Temporary sensitivity changes during healing typically resolve.

Yes. Labiaplasty doesn’t affect fertility, though future childbirth may alter your surgical results.

Most procedures take one to two hours, depending on the amount of tissue involved and whether other procedures are combined.

Incisions follow the labia’s natural contours, so scarring is typically minimal and fades with healing.

Light walking is fine soon after surgery; more strenuous activity generally waits about six weeks.

Because tissue is surgically removed, results are generally permanent, though aging, pregnancy, and significant weight changes can influence the area over time.
