How Does a Tummy Tuck Work?
A tummy tuck is a multi-step procedure customized to each patient’s needs. First, you will be gently given anesthesia while listening to relaxing music. Dr. Coville will be by your side as he ensures you are comfortable during the surgery. Then, Dr. Coville will make a horizontal incision just above the pubic hairline. You will have decided with Dr. Fred on where the incision will be placed. He usually can accommodate you, so it lies hidden within your bikini line. How long the incision is will depend on your particular needs, goals, and circumstances.
Next, Dr. Coville separates the skin from the abdominal muscles and lifts it to access the underlying tissues. He removes excess skin and fat and tightens the abdominal muscles into a more toned position. Dr. Fred will often give you a beautiful hourglass waistline with his signature “Cornerstone Cinch Stitch.”
Usually, he likes to sculpt your abdomen, waist, and love handles at the same time with liposuction. This is above and beyond what many surgeons do during their abdominoplasty; and results in a beautifully flat and sculpted tummy that you will be very proud of.
Once he has finished performing the internal tailoring, he will remove any excess skin and create a new belly button for you. He follows that with meticulous skin suturing to give you the best scar possible.
A full tummy tuck typically takes two to four hours. Dr. Coville frequently includes liposuction in the surgery for better slimming results. A mini tummy tuck may be ideal for patients with mild to moderate sagging and excess skin.
Tummy Tuck Results and Recovery
After a tummy tuck, your abdomen will be swollen, and you can expect some discomfort for a few days. Dr. Coville will give you detailed instructions and prescribe pain medication as needed, and we encourage you to reach out to us with any questions or concerns during your recovery. Depending on the extent of your procedure, you can return to work in two to four weeks.
As swelling subsides, you’ll see a slimmer, more toned abdomen. The effects of a tummy tuck are technically permanent, but age and weight changes can cause more sagging and unwanted fat. With a healthy lifestyle and weight management, you can enjoy abdominoplasty results for several years.
